2nd in the Bangalore Detectives Club series, private investigator Kaveri Murthy is asked to investigate a case of embezzlement that turns to murder. Living in India during British rule, Kaveri must navigate social expectations as well as dangerous individuals as she untangles all the clues she uncovers. Complicating factors for Kaveri are developments like anti-British sentiment and women's suffrage as they butt against traditional views and attitudes of individuals like her mother-in-law.2nd in the Bangalore Detectives Club series, private investigator Kaveri Murthy is asked to investigate a case of embezzlement that turns to murder. First in an amusing mystery series, featuring Bernie Little, a private eye, and his dog, Chet. Narrated by Chet, there is plenty of humor to go along with the fast-paced action. Bernie and Chet agree to look for a missing teen; the case complicated by the parents' divorce. A fun take on a traditional genre and a quick read.First in an amusing mystery series, featuring Bernie Little, a private eye, and his dog, Chet. A stand alone novel that focuses on women cops in Atlanta in 1974. There is strong character development of the main women , Kate and Maggie, which makes for an enjoyable read. I can tell that Slaughter did quite a bit of research on various angles, and her portrayals of the hostile environment for the women on the force is spot on. While some readers may object to strong language or sex, it provides a realistic portrait of cop life, and attitudes of the 70's.A stand alone novel that focuses on women cops in Atlanta in 1974. A thorough look behind the scenes of two crimes committed in 1985 by Larry Gene Bell. It is neither sensational in the writing nor does it glorify the suspect or officers. Written in a straightforward manner it can be on the dry side, but still carries the readers along at a good pace. Includes a few black and white photos (none gratuitous).A thorough look behind the scenes of two crimes committed in 1985 by Larry Gene Bell. I can’t decide what I enjoy more - reading about all the delicious food and drinks or trying to figure out ‘whodunnit.’ Lots of food, family drama, friendship, a little romance coupled with a little murder and mystery. The author states this book is ‘heavier’ in tone than the first in the series due to some topics covered. I found it to be more serious, but also realistic in character development, but cozy readers should not worry - there is no added gore or gruesome details.I can’t decide what I enjoy more - reading about all the delicious food and drinks or trying to figure out ‘whodunnit.’ Lots of food, family drama, friendship, a little romance coupled with a little murder and mystery. I enjoyed this book, as I have enjoyed all of Connelly’s novels. What disappointed me the most was that Ballard is slowly becoming more and more like Harry Bosch. What I had enjoyed most about the addition of her character was that she was NOT just like Harry. It does seem like perhaps the series could be moving to partnering Bosch & Ballard, which would be an interesting twist. Thus far both characters have been realized as solo operators who don’t feel the need to play by the rules or work well with others.
Renee has 2 cases she’s investigating: a series of rapes, which she’s working with a partner and a murder she tackles solo. I thought the ending of the serial rapists was a pretty obvious solution, but the murder case was the more interesting and complicated of the two.I enjoyed this book, as I have enjoyed all of Connelly’s novels. An enjoyable story of 3 sisters, witchcraft, good v. evil and power. It’s more about women’s rights than anything. One of the main themes is that witchcraft has been passed from woman to woman, through various means - songs, stories, recipes, dances, etc. Unfortunately, there isn’t much space given to anything other than the Euro-centric fairy tales. The other means are mentioned in passing, and I wish more space had been given to them.An enjoyable story of 3 sisters, witchcraft, good v. evil and power. I listened to the audiobook , read by Will Damron. It's a fascinating story of how Elizabeth Holmes was able to con so many people for so long and for so much. The narration is a bit restrained and presented in a rather matter-of-fact tone, so it's serviceable, though not particularly thrilling to listen to. I started this title, thinking the trial was complete, but learned that the has only just started in Sept 2021, after having been delayed several times. It is frustrating to listen to the many, many people who had suspicions back away or keep quiet because of the tactics used by Theranos and its lawyers, and it's particularly hard to go back in time and remember what we didn't know about technology in the early 2000's and even the 2010's. After finishing this audiobook, I went back to find and read the Wall Street Journal articles Carryrou wrote in 2015 & 2016.I listened to the audiobook , read by Will Damron. Snarky characters are a weakness of mine - always love them, and Ropa is no different. Post-apocalyptic Scotland is a bit confusing - it’s like Scotland got left in the past, but everything is more difficult and awful. I felt like it was a better, more realized, adult version of a Jonathan Stroud novel (which is not a bad thing, because I love the Lockwood series). Upon finishing, I immediately set out to see when the next is being published…(not until March 2022).Snarky characters are a weakness of mine - always love them, and Ropa is no different.
