After witnessing the death of a racehorse, an eleven-year-old girl named Halle struggles with lingering distress as she begins sixth grade at a new school. Seeking to better understand the horse's life, she visits a nearby stable, where she meets a pony that had been closely bonded with the animal. As Halle becomes involved in caring for the pony, she develops a connection that helps her process her experience. When the stable faces possible sale and redevelopment, Halle confronts concerns about the future of the animals and the place that has become meaningful to her.
