Mario Jiménez, a young fisherman, decides to abandon his position to become the postman for Isla Negra, where the only person who sends and receives correspondence is the poet Pablo Neruda. Jiménez admires Neruda and patiently waits for that one day when the poet will dedicate a book to Mario, or produce something more than a brief crossword or the gas bill. Jiménez will eventually see his desire fulfilled and a peculiar relationship will be struck up between the two men. However, the strained, tense atmosphere that covers Chile during those years will precipitate a dramatic conclusion to their time together.
