The benches gathered beneath a shade tree in Notasulga, Alabama -- we assume this is a place to rest in a parklike setting. The locked black double door on the side of Seattle's Moore Theatre seems to be a service entrance. The mundane appearance of each scene is reinforced by our assumptions and expectations. In fact, that double door was once the "colored entrance" to the theater's second balcony. The shaded benches in Notasulga are where Black men sat to have their blood drawn for the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. Accompanied by deeply personal essays and precise historical context, the stories and photographs in this book seek to raise awareness about and to preserve the evidence of American racism, past and present. When these telling traces are erased, the lessons they contain are easily denied and forgotten -- particularly by those who seek to deny and forget."--Back cover.
