When his friend and fellow game warden, Will Jensen, reportedly commits suicide, Joe Pickett is temporarily reassigned to Jensen's Teton district in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. His separation from his wife finds him dangerously attracted to a married woman, while back in Saddlestring, his wife Marybeth struggles with her new business, and more ominously, some threatening phone calls. In Pickett's absence she turns to falconer and family friend Nate Romanowski. Back in Jackson Hole, Joe begins to close in on the truth about his friend's death, but he has begun to experience blackouts, mood swings, and memory loss - and he wonders if he'll end up the same way his friend Will did.
