Mighty Fitz
the Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald
On November 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, transporting a full cargo of taconite ore pellets from Superior, Wisconsin to Detroit, Michigan, sank in the stormy waters of Lake Superior. The sinking of "The Fitz" claimed the lives of all 29 crewmembers aboard and remains the largest shipwreck in Great Lakes history. Memorial events for the 50th anniversary are planned in several Great Lakes States and Canada, including a memorial at Split Rock Lighthouse in Two Harbors, MN.
