In addition, the book follows Headmistress Waters who is doing her best to hold everything together, but things are starting to escape from her grasp, including her own personal life. I really loved the characters in this book, and I think Novic did a brilliant job creating complicated people while also sharing a slice of Deaf history and showing people more about the Deaf community in the US. - Antonio B., Plymouth Library Show less

It explores the idea of the commodification of time and how it would disrupt the lives of the people that donate (or have time stolen from them). It unrolls as a mystery to be solved by victim who has lost time and is trying to get grips with who they are, what their identity is. Although I never warmed up to the character Paulie, I did enjoy the other contestants and there are characters that reflect where America is today, including a podcast bro. I found this to be a very funny and poignant coming-of-age story and I really grew to care about the characters. I devoured it in one sitting like Garfiel...Show more This was one of the most FUN reads in my adult life. There was humor, intrigue, and a brilliantly executed idea. I devoured it in one sitting like Garfield devours lasagna. If you've ever downloaded a font, you've likely seen the pangram "A quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog" which includes all 26 letters of the alphabet. The islanders of Nollop revere the creator of this sentence and believe he essentially invented the English language. A large century-old monument stands in the center of the island. Just as you might expect with a sign so old, it starts to fall apart. One by one, letters from the pangram start to fall down and the High Island Council views this as a divine directive to eliminate that letter from all written and spoken language. Cousins Ella and Tassie maintain pen-pal correspondence and desperately fight against a suddenly totalitarian government.
