Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, describes Brian Robeson, a thirteen year old who was sitting on his flight when the pilot gets a heart attack, causing the plane to crash. Surviving the crash, Brian is armed with only a hatchet that his mother gave him. Only thirteen years old and unexpectedly thrust into the woods, he must learn to brave the wilderness all by himself. During his time in the woods, he learns how to start a fire, hunt for food, and fend off danger. But it’s not just about surviving the wild. Brian has to fight off homesickness and the painful feeling of his shattered family as his parents divorced. Hatchet was one of my favorite books that I read. This book is filled with vivid details of Brian’s exploits, yet at the same time is also very straightforward. I would give it a 9/10 since the book tells us a lot about life. Disaster may come unexpected and we have to face it to survive; option B is extremely rare. I would recommend the book for readers of ages 14-18 as the book may be a little grim at times. If you’re into survival or wildlife, you should definitely give this a read.
