One of those books you pick up off the shelves because something about it calls to you. Yes, I guess I sometimes judge a book by its cover, and the book didn't disappoint. Each short story was somehow simultaneously familiar and completely new. Familiar, not that I knew where it was going or that I had ever experienced anything even close to the events portrayed, but familiar in that they explored the most human of experiences and with no veils covering often unspoken experiences and emotions - our insecurities, our biases, our difficult and sometimes horrible experiences. At first, I found the way the author ended the stories unsettling, but getting deeper into the pages and becoming more intimate with Julia's writing style, I found the endings rather satisfying. What started as an uncomfortable feeling reading these stories ended with anticipation for what was coming next and disappointment when the last story was finished. I'll definitely seek out more by this author and continue to wander the library shelves and pick up books based on its cover! [edit: this is the author's first book... so looking forward to seeing what she writes next!]
