*** STARS The storyline follows 4 survivors of the sinking of the Titanic. Tess, an aspiring seamstress, thinks she's had an incredibly lucky break when she is hired by famous designer Lady Lucile Duff Gordon to be a personal maid on the Titanic's doomed voyage. Once on board, Tess meets two men, one an uneducated but kind sailor and the other an enigmatic Chicago millionaire. On the 4th night the Titanic sinks. The sailor witnesses Lord and Lady Duff Gordon?s questionable actions during the tragedy. Rumors about the survivors begin to circulate, and Lady Duff Gordon quickly becomes the subject of media scorn and later the official U. S. hearings on the Titanic and the behavior of passengers and crew. Instead of focusing on the disaster itself, most of this novel takes place after the sinking and looks at the hearings and the impact of the disaster on the lives of the surviving passengers, especially on their ethical / unethical behaviors in order to save themselves and others. Much is based on real events. I liked this point of view and the ultimate choices made by Tess. Recommend
