The Stars and the Blackness Between Them is a novel that follows two young Black girls from completely different backgrounds that are trying to find happiness in their lives despite all the curveballs that the world seems to throw at them. Audre is from Trinidad, but got sent to the United States after her incredibly religious Catholic mother learned that she has a secret girlfriend. Mabel is from the United States and is not exactly religious... until she needs to find something to believe in once she is diagnosed with a rapid form of cancer. In order to help Mabel, Audre speaks to her ancestors and her grandmother, Queenie, to try to cure Mabel from her sickness. At the same time, Mabel is learning more about her past and how important astrology is to her own spirituality. A heartbreaking but wonderful novel told in Petrus’s beautiful lyrics about finding happiness in an unforgiving world. For this reason, The Stars and the Blackness Between Them was a Coretta Scott King Honor Book.
