A woman digs up a buried treasure--and a buried body--in the Scottish Highlands: "There are few other crime writers in the same league."--Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post
Six feet under in a Highland peat bog lies Alice Somerville's inheritance, buried by her grandfather at the end of World War II. But when Alice finally uncovers it, she finds an unwanted surprise--a body with a bullet hole between the eyes. Meanwhile, DCI Karen Pirie is dealing not only with this cold case but with a domestic violence case, and as as she gets closer to the truth, it becomes clear that not everyone shares her desire for justice. Or even the idea of what justice is.
An engrossing, twisty thriller, Broken Ground is an outstanding entry in this Diamond Dagger-winning author's "superior series" ( The New York Times Book Review ).
"As always, McDermid's story lines are as richly layered as her protagonist."-- Publishers Weekly
"One of the best things about this series is the details of Karen's working life, the obstacles as well as the satisfactions, and the small pleasures of her off hours."-- Kirkus Reviews

Add a CommentI have been reading Val McDermid mysteries for over thirty years. I always enjoy her characters. I thought this book had a couple of side stories thrown in that, resolved or unresolved, detracted from the police procedural. I still highly recommend this author. Kristi & Abby Tabby
This series is excellent! The characters are sympathetically flawed, there is always a twist or two, and I'm never disappointed with the storylines. Broken Ground was no exception ... and I was swooning over Hamish!
Good investigation, office and professional intrigues, and a predictable outcome.

I love books with intelligent characters. Karen Pirie. Her hostile superior, a woman, adds to the challenges faced by Pirie as she becomes involved in solving the 30 year old murder of a man found buried in the peat next to a hidden motorcycle.
Peaty, rather than gritty - a body is found in a bog... Val McDermid writes a ripping yarn with great characters (DCI Karen Pirie is TOUGH!) and very astute observations of human behaviour. We are pleased to be hosting Val McDermid at Christchurch WORD Festival.
Slow getting started, but it picked up eventually. A good beach read.
This is the second book I've tried by this author. Not bad, but not skillful enough to draw me in. It's not high level writing. DNF on page 15.
you know a story is told by a master when it flows so smoothly that it feels like a doddle, effortlessly knocked out by mcdermid when the opposite is probably the case. google search came in handy for the unfamiliar scottish slang and brand names, but what a pleasure this was to read. now I'm craving a gin and tonic...
Scottish motorcycle burial. hard read at beginning. then hard to put down.
