Up until her twelfth birthday, Kiranmala considered herself an ordinary sixth-grader in Parsippany, New Jersey, but then her parents disappear and a drooling rakkhosh demon shows up in her kitchen, and soon she is swept into another dimension, full of magic, winged horses, talking birds (very annoying), and cute princes--and somehow Kiranmala needs to sort it all out, find her parents, and basically save the world.

One of my favorite books from 2018. For anyone that loves the works of Rick Riordan, you will not want to skip this book!

An adventure-filled novel about a girl who discovers on her twelfth birthday that she is really and Indian princess, and must now save her parents from a monster. I loved Kiran's feisty spirit, as well as the references to Bengali folktales that are further elaborated on in the author's note.

On her 12th birthday, Kiranmala discovers that maybe she is an Indian princess after all. Her parents have disappeared and two princes show up to protect her and whisk her away to safety and help her find her parents.

This was a fun adventure novel with a strong female protagonist. It is written in a humorous, over-the-top style. I appreciated the author's note at the end discussing the mythology behind the characters and stories.

Lots of entertaining action and humor with a fresh, interesting mythology. It has a somewhat cartoonish and melodramatic tone that will appeal to some and put off others.

Fans of Percy Jackson will enjoy new adventures loaded with Indian culture and folktales. Spunky Kiranmala is surprised when her parents disappear on her 12th birthday, leading her on an adventure full of danger and self-discovery in order to rescue them. Full of humor, action and mythology, readers are taken on a rakkhosh-fighting, dimension-jumping, fast-paced quest.

A girl growing up in New Jersey has been told by her parents her whole lift that she’s a princess, and she never believes it – until, on her 12th birthday, her parents disappear and two princes come to take her to the Kingdom Beyond Seven Oceans and Thirteen Rivers to fulfil her destiny and rescue them. On their adventure they’ll meet the demon queen, a snarky talking bird, the Serpent King (who has a giant python from whom they must steal a gem), and cross a river made of rubies. Oh, and there are flying horses and baby stars, too. If you’re a fan of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson or Magnus Chase series, you’ll love meeting Kiranmala!
