Everything You Love Will Burn

Inside the Rebirth of White Nationalism in America

"Six years ago, Vegas Tenold embedded himself among the members of three of America's most ideologically extreme white nationalist groups--the KKK, the National Socialist Movement, and the Traditionalist Workers Party. At the time, these groups were part of a disorganized counterculture that felt far from the mainstream. But since then, all that has changed. Racially-motivated violence has been on open display at rallies in Charlottesville, Berkeley, Pikesville, Phoenix, and Boston. Membership in white nationalist organizations is rising, and national politicians, including the president, are validating their perceived grievances. Everything You Love Will Burn offers a terrifying, sobering inside look at these newly empowered movements, from their conventions to backroom meetings with Republican operatives. Tenold introduces us to neo-Nazis in Brooklyn; a millennial Klanswoman in Tennessee; and a rising star in the movement, nicknamed the "Little Führer" by the Southern Poverty Law Center, who understands political power and is organizing a grand coalition of far-right groups to bring them into the mainstream. Everything You Love Will Burn takes readers to the dark, paranoid underbelly of America, a world in which the white race is under threat and the enemy is everywhere."--Dust jacket.
Reveals how white supremacist and nationalist groups rose in influence to achieve political support at the highest levels of government, examining the transformation of once-small groups into threatening mainstream organizations.

I learned a lot about those involved in the world of white supremacy. The author does a good job of connecting the dots on how and why they believe what they believe. It's interesting to see that many (if not most) involved in that movement that were profiled in the book had very bleak lives. Always on the move, trouble holding a job, substance abusers (tobacco, alcohol, pills) and just can't seem to get their lives together. The the thing that unites them? Hate and bigotry.

We, by which I mean complacent white, educated liberals, like to think of racism and white supremacy in America as an aberration. It's easier to see it as the province of a radical fringe-Klansmen, backwoods bigots, rabid neo-Nazis-rather than as a deeply embedded part of the American narrative and American ethos. Trump's election has exposed, perhaps more than any other event in recent history, the depth and extent of racism in this country, and it's been truly frightening to see an emboldened extreme right ("alt-right" is too euphemistic) and there shameless embrace of nationalism. Norwegian Vegas Tenold goes deep into the movement for this galvanizing and unsettling work of investigative journalism. His protagonist/antagonist is Matthew Heimbach, founder of the now defunct Traditional Workers Party. Called "the affable, youthful face of hate in America" and the "Little Fuhrer," Heimbach, like Richard Spencer, is not a cartoonish, inarticulate racist, which, in a way, makes him more dangerous. Any American who cares about this, which should by everyone, needs to read Tenold's book. The title comes from Heimbach.

I'm not a big Non-Fiction guy. So imagine my surprise when I burned through Everything You Love... in a scant 3 weeks. This rocketed to the top of my priority-list of 5 other books I'm currently reading. (not often I get something like this back to the library on time!)
I couldn't recommend this more highly to anyone interested in White Pride Fringe Groups. Vegas Tenold runs down the scene in a way I'm sure has Tom Wolfe smiling down from Authors Heaven.
