Over the summer of 1973, a seventeen-year-old boy is vacationing with his family in Italy. While there, he encounters a doctorate student named Oliver who works for his father. Over the course of the summer, these two men develop profound feelings for one another and begin to explore things that they never have before. This romantic drama channels emotions from the LGBTQ community during this time frame, as well as the very human and innate feelings of love and attraction. I would rate this film 4.5/5 stars and recommend it to anyone who loves a good love story.

Kinda ich, the age difference between the two lovers had me slightly creeped out. I thought it not in good taste to be sleeping with your mentors young teenaged son. It would have worked better for me if they were closer in age and the older man wasn't working for the kids dad.

extraordinary, a gay fantasy, a gay idyll, for anyone who might be ready for it, a cross between David Lean's "Summertime", with Katharine Hepburn, if anyone can remember that, and Leo Tolstoy, his profound moral punchline, the final father and son scene here is epough to knock anyone into pofound introspection, superb performances from everyone involved, with special mention to Arnie Hammer, hot, as in utterly steaming

Couldn't wait for it to end. Two tedious hours watching two males ride their bikes....and equally boring sexual exploits.

There is nothing I can say about this movie that has not already been said, except maybe to say that everyone who gave it a one star review can lose my number. It blows my mind that people said this movie was boring because I didn't take my eyes off of the TV. I'm actually sad that I didn't get to see this in theaters. Timothee Chalamet was charming and captivating from the beginning, and while it took me awhile to care about Armie Hammer, midway through the movie, after the two have consummated their relationship, Hammer's facial expressions are what really drew me to him. These two actors, honestly almost everyone in this movie, could have talked with their eyes the entire film and I still would have watched. Yes, it was about rich white people in Italy, and sure, rich white people have been dominating film for so stupidly long, but it was also a tragic gay love story that was tragic with no help from outside forces. There's a documentary titled The Celluloid Closet that talks about the gay role throughout history, and how the gay character is typically either mocked, killed, or converted. Call Me By Your Name does not play by these rules, and it's refreshing to just watch a film about two people falling in love for the first time, and knowing that first love never lasts, but that it's still beautiful. So I lied, I had a lot to say. Whatever.

Two hours and twelve minutes allows for a lot of detail, which is where the devil is, so its said. According to Freud, as far as I understand, it is not about love, it is about pleasure as people perceive it to be. Those going the love route might find the Prophet's thoughts born out here.

Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931)

On Love

Then said Almitra,
“Speak to us of Love.”
And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a
stillness upon them. And with a great voice he said:
When love beckons to you follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste
the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for
your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches
that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to
the earth.
Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred
bread for God’s sacred feast.
All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets
of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life’s heart.
But if in your fear you would seek only love’s peace and love’s pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out
of love’s threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your
laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.
When you love you should not say, “God is in my heart,” but
rather, I am in the heart of God.”
And think not you can direct the course of love, if it finds you worthy,
directs your course.
Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day
of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a
song of praise upon your lips.

There have not been a lot of good coming of age gay films and unfortunately this is not one either. It's too bad because there are some excellent elements. Timothée Chalamet hits all the right notes as the young man, Elio, struggling with his sexual desires. Armie Hammer, on the other hand, is fairly wooden (no pun intended). His character, Oliver, is first aloof and later fairly predacious. The setting of rural northern Italy is beautiful, but boring. The film seems to go on forever with young Elio falling harder and harder for the good-looking, but lackluster Oliver.

Exquisite. Poetry of the highest form brought to life. There is a skillful juxtaposition between the leading actors which works beautifully. A true classic of our time.

The Italian setting is very beautiful. The performances were authentic and heartfelt. It was a lovely film to watch. I also, however, found it very slow-paced and not a whole lot really happens. I also found the age different between the two main characters made it a little creepy.

All the shiny veneer of a great relationship movie in a truly beautiful and serene setting that never quite stills the nagging and uncomfortable feeling of being lured into seeing a window dressed - and even lauded - predation as something other than what it is.

"Then let me say one more thing. It'll clear the air. I may have come close, but I never had what you two have. Something always held me back or stood in the way. How you live your life is your business, just remember, our hearts and our bodies are given to us only once. And before you know it, your heart is worn out, and, as for your body, there comes a point when no one looks at it, much less wants to come near it. Right now, there's sorrow, pain. Don't kill it and with it the joy you've felt. " - Mr. Perlman
