I like Paul Giamatti but had a hard time getting into this movie. Maybe dark humour? NOT crappy, definitley not my cup of tea.

Very well done. Creative flips between cinema and reality. Definitely worth seeing.

This film provides the background to the life of Harvey Pekar & all those appearances on television in the 80's and 90's. Harvey's social conditions explain his rather irascible personality. The juxtaposition of real personalities with actors in the film gives credibility to the actors' portrayal of the characters. You may ask yourself if you watch the historical Letterman clips or the clips of Harvey in this film, "Is this guy for real?" Apparently, the answer is an emphatic yes.

American Splendor is a film about Harvey Pekar, an ordinary guy living a bleak existence that decides to work with comic book artists and start a comic book series about the travails of his life. He became famous and when he got on the David Letterman Show, I realized that the story was real, as the real Harvey shows up in the Letterman show of a few decades ago. The movie is curious like this, as this is the only biographical movie where I have seen the real characters interacting with the actors. Harvey never got rich, but the royalties gave him some additional money to raise his living standard above subsistence.

I liked this warm story about a man living in Cleveland average blue collar who makes an impact on the world. It was funny, sweet and had some serious themes when the main character develops cancer and the battles that he goes through.

One of the most creative bio-pics ever made. An extremely innovative form of storytelling.

Paul Giamatti is incredible playing comic-book legend Harvey Pekar.
