I give it a "meh." I liked this author's other book Eight Hundred Grapes much better. None of the characters in this book were likeable, I couldn't root for anyone. The ending fell completely flat.

Good beach book. Easy, breezy reading. Just enjoy it and don't examine the plot too closely.

While the demands and competitiveness of a celebrity's curated (great word) lifestyle are credible, there are numerous plot lines which aren't even remotely plausible.

The book jacket crows: ". . .what Sunshine does amid the ashes of her own destruction may well save her life.

"In a world where celebrity is a careful construct, Hello Sunshine is a compelling, funny, and evocative novel about what it means to live an authentic life in an inauthentic age.

My hunch is that everyone involved (author, editor, publicist) in this book is living an inauthentic life and lost their authentic selves long, long ago. It doesn't appear anybody did much actual research beyond maybe a weekend or two in the Hamptons, gourmet dinners charged to somebody's expense account, and alcohol-soaked binge-watching of Food Network Star (Food Network gets skewered ~ pun intended).

Spoiler alert: the ending is disappointing. I don't get the sense that Sunshine learned much from her fall from grace or her husband's betrayal. Contrary to promotional promise, there wasn't much rising from the ashes.

Not sure why it's getting such good ratings. Sunshine is not at all likable nor compelling in any way. The writing is only mediocre. It's hard to stay with. Don't waste your time on this one.

A quick, smart summer read with some real depth. Someone else read this so we can talk about the ending!

Sunshine Mackenzie hit it big with a YouTube cooking show, a bestselling cookbook, and a promising deal with the Food Network. But when she gets hacked, and her secrets are out there for the whole world to see, everything falls apart.

What are the consequences of selectively choosing how we portray ourselves and our lives rather than just embracing the plain old, sometimes ugly, often messy truth? We all do it: choose the most flattering selfie, rewrite our social media posts until we have just the right mix of witty and sassy, or brag about the best parts of our weekend (even if it was only 15 minutes) instead of the mind numbing chores that really took up most of our day.

Hello Sunshine explores the cost of curating our lives via social media and the many ways we search for what we think our lives are supposed to be.
