When Graham Cavanaugh divorced his first wife, it was to marry his girlfriend, Audra, a woman as irrepressible as she is spontaneous and fun. But, Graham learns, life with Audra can also be exhausting, constantly interrupted by chatty phone calls, picky-eater houseguests, and invitations to weddings of people he's never met. Audra firmly believes that through the sheer force of her personality she can overcome the most socially challenging interactions, shepherding her son through awkward playdates and origami club, and even deciding to establish a friendship with Graham's first wife, Elspeth. Graham isn't sure he understands why Audra longs to be friends with the woman he divorced. After all, former spouses are hard to categorize -- are they enemies, old flames, or just people you know really, really well? And as Graham and Audra share dinners, holidays, and late glasses of wine with his first wife he starts to wonder: How can anyone love two such different women? Did I make the right choice? Is there a right choice?

I absolutely loved this book. It had plenty of moments that made me laugh out loud. The author did a wonderful job with the character of Audra. She really leaped off the page and came to life as I read, and she is definitely someone I'd want to hang out and be friends with in real life, even though she had her exasperating moments.

Whenever I picked up this book, I felt as if I were spending time in the company of dear friends. Easy read, wildly entertaining, heartfelt and made me laugh out loud.

Graham has a new wife who is nothing like his old wife. So why does he miss her so much? And was his new wife always so ... exhausting?

This book is a painful reminder of why I don't watch TV sitcoms. And why an abundance of favorable reviews do not necessarily foretell an enjoyable reading experience. I struggled through the first chapter, put it aside to cool off, had a go at the second chapter, couldn't stand it any more, skipped to the beginning of chapters 3, 4 and then 5. At which point I gave up. Were I to have found myself in the unfortunate position of that poor schmuck Graham, married to Audra, I'm afraid I would have murdered her some time back -- or gone stark raving mad. I understand the book is intended to be humorous. I found it as annoying as the proverbial fingernails screeching on a blackboard.
This is the last book I will have read this year and it was by far the worst. By having lemmed it after 5 chapters, I managed to prevent it spoiling my year.

Standard Deviation's likeable protagonist humorously, thoughtfully and humanly examines the complexities of social interaction, commitment and human connection. Well-written and relatable.

This debut novel explores marriage, temptation, origami , and raising a child with Asperger's Syndrome. The characters are quirky and there are lots of laugh out loud moments.

Great book and at times humorous. I think that many individuals can relate to the interesting family dynamics.

Well-written, laugh out loud funny at times, bittersweet. A good beach or vacation read.
