A magic carpet ride for those of us in thrall of the "police procedural/thriller" genre: a supposed suicide, a rash of small children's deaths... at the hospital, a policeman rendered critical, but not stable, a gory attempted murder, and more much more. Seen from the viewpoint of a medical doctor who is the ex-lover of the constable-in-charge of the investigation who is herself an alcoholic. Oh yeah, the medical doctor/hero? is highly dependent upon cocaine. And his fascination with the case solves it... sort of. McCarthy's writing is impeccable and hurls you along the storyline. Don't miss it, well worth your time.
