After a 12-year-old Irish lad and his two pals fail to return from a day in the woods, searchers find only the terrified sixth grader--with blood-filled shoes and no memory of what happened. Now 32, the tragedy's sole survivor Rob Ryan is a detective on Dublin's Murder Squad. A current investigation takes Rob to the exact site of his childhood trauma. With the present case chillingly similar to his 20-year-old nightmare, Rob hopes to unlock the shrouded secrets of his past.

Atmospheric, noir-y first effort by Tana French.

Worth a listen, but this book is not as tightly crafted as later Murder Squad books. Clearly French’s writing is improving with practice. The narrator In the “woods” goes on longer than necessary, and the resolution of plot details at the end seem a bit heavy-handed.

It is amazing, however, how well the author can nail down the teenage voice, especially teenage girls. French observes human nature keenly.

In terms of the audio: Stephen Crossley is a pro. However, I wish that Penguin Audio had chosen an actor who could do both Irish and British voices, since most of the characters in this tale are Irish born and bred. To be fair, the mystery’s narrator Rob Ryan went to an English boarding school and is said to speak “BBC English.” But we lose a lot when the working class people living on the estate in Knocknaree and the UCD college students at the dig all speak BBC English as well.

Very engrossing although long introduction to a cast of characters. Never dull. Very well read. I am eager to get the next one in the series and am excited to find a new author to get involved with.

I think this was Tana French's first novel, and it introdcued the characters which appear in subsequent stories.
This is an excellent and different story, touching on many details of life and growing up in Ireland. Well worth reading.
