In a bracingly original debut, filmmaker Benjamin Crotty uses the tragicomic plight of a frail young man stranded at a remote military post amid a lascivious band of army wives to craft a queer soap opera for the ages.

Announcer: It is the biggest reform of the army since the end of obligatory service. The army today, there will be fewer soldiers and more technology. 54,000 posts will be cut out of 271,000. More importantly, the military map will be redrawn. Dozens of bases will close. Confronting this new reality, officers oscillate between pragmatism and anxiety.
Welcome to Fort Buchanan. COMING SOON: 150 Apartment Units.
“I have invented no labor-saving machine. I haven’t invented anything. Nor will I be able to leave behind me any wealthy bequest to found a hospital or library, nor reminiscence of any deed of courage for my country, nor literary or intellectual success, nor book for the book-shelf. But a few carols vibrating through the air I leave, for comrades and lovers.”

W1 – But some officers let their spouses deal with solitude differently.
Man – They let them cheat?
W2 - It’s not considered cheating.
W1 – I started when Phil was in Gabon. I got the bug.
W3 – It’s safe, it's fun.
W2 – Can’t get pregnant.
Regeneration. A fresh start. Life renewed. Winter dies. Spring is born. Night becomes day. Like a wave that crashes onto the shore and disappears. Then another right behind it, then another, and another.

Woman 1 (W1): My entire worldview changed when I went to college. And then there’s all that experimentation.
W2: What do you mean experimentation?
W1: Let’s just say I lived.
Man – I didn’t really experiment in nursing school.
W2 – Somehow we knew that.
W3 – Well, I didn’t go to college, but I certainly experimented.
W2 – So anyone her named their private parts? Just to keep the pot stirred.
W1 – China.
W2 – China?
W1 – As in “only the best dine on my fine china.”
W2 – Mine used to be a day at the beach, but since my pregnancy it’s become more of a trek through the jungle.
W3 – What about you, Justine?
W4 – Mine’s had so many names. Let’s see, my Pink Sea, Mound of Venus, Shirley.
W3 – Shirley?
W4 – Now is R-can.
W3 – R-can?
W4 – Rattlesnake canyon.

An original film that explores the lives of military "wives" as the men are off at war. In just a hair over 60 minutes, it covered a surprising wide scope on their challenges in loneliness, sexual needs, depression, death, PTSD and changes. A generous commentary from NYT:

A gay man raising his 18-year-old daughter alone while his partner is serving in the French military in Djibouti meets a group of female army wives who experiment sexually with each other while their spouses are away. Made in 16mm by an American expat working in France, this funny, sensuous tale of love, loneliness, fidelity, and desire is one of the most original and acclaimed movies of the year. Adding to its uniqueness is the fact that all of the dialogue in the movie is lifted word for word from countless unnamed American TV shows. “A languorous pastoral comedy about sexual fluidity.” –Village Voice. “As if someone had hired the postcolonialist director Claire Denis (Beau Travail) to shoot an episode of M*A*S*H.” –The NY Times. Subtitles. DCP. 65 min.
