Paterson is a bus driver in the city of Paterson, New Jersey - they share the name. Every day, Paterson adheres to a simple routine: he drives his daily route, observing the city as it drifts across his windshield and overhearing fragments of conversation swirling around him; he writes poetry into a notebook; he walks his dog; he stops in a bar and drinks exactly one beer. He goes home to his wife, Laura. By contrast, Laura's world is ever changing.

As Paterson makes these rounds again and again in his bus, Jarmusch unhurriedly crafts a cinematic ode to finding both art and delight in the quotidian.
To the people who think there is little to no " plot " I guess they are not familiar with " art " movies.

This offbeat project is actually very engaging, bringing droll humor and sweet-hearted feeling to its low-key affirmation of ordinary life.

Boring.

One star, only because Adam Driver stars, otherwise complete waste of time.

I don't know what to say about this film. Paterson, a Bus Driver in Paterson, New Jersey, observes and often interacts with people on his bus route, with people he meets on the streets of Paterson, people he sees in his favorite bar, and his young wife and some may say rather ugly dog. These are the kind of people that one never, ever sees in American films.

OK, if you are looking for simple and mildly amusing, you 'may' like this. If you are not a poet at heart, I doubt you would get much you of it. I sort of liked it and it did keep us interested, but I did feel some minor frustration over if there was any kind of direction the characters were heading in, as there was little story. More of an examination of the characters and significance of mundane life observances.

This is definitely not a mainstream movie. (Which for me is a plus.)

It depicts a week in the lives of a couple who live in Paterson, New Jersey. The husband's name happens to be Paterson. It is about the low-key everyday living situations which would not be important to most people. Not much happens, which might be "the point." It is about seeing and feeling and being. This is what we should be doing, and it should not be boring.

The last scene with the Japanese tourist who had come to Paterson because William Carlos Williams lived there and he wanted to see what it was like, was the perfect Jim Jarmusch denouement.

This movie is the most pointless, boring and stupid waste of time.

I just read some of the 'good' comments. I can't believe how different we all are. Go figure!

Paterson is a beautifully simple film following the life of a poet (Adam Driver) and his wife, Laura (Golshifteh Farahani) through a single week. Director Jim Jarmusch did a wonderful job of focusing on the intricacies of day without succumbing to temptations to sensationalize the plot. The sequencing of frames was wonderful throughout.

Remarkable, pearl of a movie. Front and center, the iridescence of introspection as it filters the minutiae of daily existence, from which the lead character authors reflective poetry. Paterson, a film that offers an inoculation from ADD, chronic unawareness, smartphone addiction, the latter afflicting the vast majority of our dullish population.

A gentle 9 to 5 city bus driver went through his daily routines during the course of one week trying to keep up with an enigmatic gorgeous wife (Farāhānī who slept in the nude) and her spoiled English bulldog in the Jersey town Paterson where he was born and everyone knew everyone, except for occasional tourists, as one Japanese poet. An artsy film that required patience to watch as words of poems being displayed slowly as being written on paper. Crazy Adam Driver in "This Is Where I Leave You" is not but a man finding meaning in his tidy little private PG13 neighborhood.

Pages of quotes in IMDb. These from Japanese poet among the best in mho:

My poetry only in Japanese. No translation. Poetry in translations is like taking a shower with a raincoat on. ... Sometimes an empty page presents more possibilities.
