The story of Paul Dedalus, an anthropologist preparing to leave Tajikistan. Reflecting on his life, he has a series of flashbacks starting from his childhood in Roubaix; his mother's attacks of madness, his father's alienating depression. He remembers a student trip to the USSR, where a clandestine mission led him to offer up his own identity for a young Russian, whom he considered a phantom twin for the remainder of his life.

I had the feeling this movie was assembled in the editing room. Confusing characters, confusing time switches, unappealing leads. And way too long. Don't waste your time.

Good for discussion of confused teens and inadequate parenting.

This is definitely not a film for novices. It reminds me of the original black and white French New Wave and at times I hear the background music that was in so many Hitchcock movies. This is the kind of film that Woody Allen’s character would joke about the French movies that the average American film viewer would use to get some ZZZZ’s. Or in "Night Moves" where Gene Hackman’s character would jealously say that his ex-wife’s new lover was taking her to movies that were less interesting to watch than watching paint dry.

It was OK! Some interesting parts, but somewhat confusing story!
