Smooth. Confident. Deeply satisfying. What else can you say about McDermid's writing? . . . The Jordan-Hill relationship remains the star of the show . . . It's a match made in heaven amid hell on earth."? Entertainment Weekly (editor's choice) on The Torment of Others Widely recognized as one of our finest crime writers, with numerous accolades and legions of devoted readers worldwide, internationally bestselling author Val McDermid is back with the latest installment in her much beloved series featuring psychologist Tony Hill and former police detective Carol Jordan. Splinter the Silence is an adrenaline-fuelled rollercoaster guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat: a masterful novel centered on the mysterious deaths of several women who were the victims of vicious cyberbullying. Is it violence if it's virtual? The outspoken women targeted by the increasingly cruel internet trolls and bullies would probably say so. For some of them, the torrents of bile and vicious threats prove too much. They begin to silence themselves in a series of high-profile suicides. Or do they? Tony Hill isn't convinced. But he's the only one. Former cop Carol Jordan is too busy messing up her life to care. Until she gets an unexpected second chance. Now it's game on, and the stakes have never been higher. Unpredictable and unputdownable, Splinter the Silence is a must-read that cements Val McDermid's place as one of the best crime writers in the business. ?Hill and Jordan dominate as brilliantly as ever."? Times Saturday Review (UK) on Cross and Burn.

As I finished this book today a man in Auckland has had his name suppression order lifted. His pleas for mitigation of a murder charge, included ,he was abandoned as a child by his Mother.
The perpetrator of murders in this Val McDermid thriller, believed he was abandoned by his Mother,as she periodically joined the camp of women at Greenham Common.
Good holiday crime fiction escapism.

Unlike the other 4 readers I found this book a complete bore. I've been reading Val McDermid for years and can't believe the same writer of Darker Domain, The Grave Tattoo, Mutiny on the Bounty, etc. could also put out this drivel. I was so excited when I first started reading it but several hundred pages in, it wasn't going anywhere. And Tony Hill and Carol Jordan? who cares about their relationship (or lack of) anymore. It's all old hat. Too much internet stuff and the murders and reasons for them too far fetched. It was too obvious who leaked Carol's DWI to the news media so no mystery there. I have to think that Ms McDermid is writing to satisfy some readers but also to making sure her retirement (when it comes) is secure.

Love her writing but technical facts not always accurate. Key to Daisy Morton's death is stated that Natural Gas is heavier than air where as it is actually 40% lighter.

I really enjoyed this novel, Val McDermid has never disappointed me. There are a couple of places where credulity is stretched, but what the heck, it`s fiction, and the overall story is very well told. An interesting, modern plot.

Grabs you from the first page, couldn't put it down! Have read the rest of the series and this one surpassed the others, in my opinion!

It has been a long wait but worth it. Here's hoping ITV have it in mind for another TV series continuing 'Wire in the Blood'.
