This delightful little book and accompanying CD gives the history of Venice from its waterways and through the folk music sung and played aboard its gondolas.. The illustrations are exquisite, mostly in colour with many famous paintings included..Donna Leon knows Venice and shares her concerns about what the huge 21st Century cruise ships are doing to the iconic waterways and surrounds.

This slight volume focuses on Venice's history via the gondola, its ancient and iconic mode of transportation. The book is beautifully illustrated with classical paintings highlighting gondolas. An extra bonus is a CD featuring barcarole music sung and played by a Venetian group. Barcarole is folk music for the gondola passengers. Included are the lyrics for the songs on the CD, both in Venetian dialect and English. The book includes a contrast between the perfection of the gondola, and what the surge in numbers of cruise ships visiting Venice is doing to Leon's beloved city.
