Christianity is portrayed in a more liberal and academic light than typical inspirational fiction. Conservative Christians will likely be offended by the implication that their beliefs are childish. However on a personal level, I loved this book. It reflected my views quite nicely and it's good to have a voice for liberal Christians every so often.

the author seems to think we all have trouble believing in God because miracles are hard to believe.
So, he removes all miracles from the Bible and rationalizes this process by discrediting the authors of the Bible.
This makes homosexuality ok and incidently it is virtuous to smoke.
