Only twenty-five and newly crowned, Elizabeth I vows to rule the country as both queen and king. But her counselors continually press her to form an advantageous marriage and produce an heir. Though none of the suitors have worked their way to her throne, the dashing--though married--Lord Robert Dudley lays claim to Elizabeth's heart. Their flirting, unescorted outings, and the appointment of Lord Robert to Master of the Horse inspire whispers, and even rumors that Elizabeth has secretly given birth to Lord Robert's child. Events take a dark turn when Robert's wife is found dead. Universal shock is followed by accusations of murder.

I realize that this book is getting rave reviews, but honestly, I find it boring. The basic plot.....Elizabeth's council argues that she should be married, she pouts, finally agrees, they bring out a suitable candidate, she strings him along, then rejects him in a hissy fit. She turns to Lord Robert, yet again, until the next time. Lather, rinse, repeat....

An obviously well-researched and interesting fictionalized account of the romance between Queen Elizabeth I and Lord Robert Dudley. Unfortunately, Elizabeth's constant indecisiveness and the way she used manipulation to get what she wanted were a source of frustration for me and kept me from really loving this book.
