This is a chillingly atmospheric mystery novel set in a remote location on the frigid and stormy east coast of Greenland. The prologue had me covered in goosebumps and completely captivated. Great character development – albeit with difficult names to pronounce. The main character, Thóra, is particularly likeable, convincing, and funny to boot. The story gripped me right up until the brilliant conclusion. I can’t wait to read more of Yrsa Sigurðardóttir’s crime novels featuring Thóra Gudmundsdóttir.

An offbeat, claustrophobic tale, The Day Is Dark is set in an environment characterized by geographical/social isolation, credulity, demon rum, corporate mercenaries, and the ever-present hand of Mother Nature. Provides an oblique, somewhat foreboding, perspective on man's mucking around on the surface of this planet, whether foraging for food to survive another day, or driven by the pervasive profit motive.
Change out the mineral at the center of the story (molybdenum) and the goings on could just as easily be set in the Australian Outback, Ecuadorian jungle, Ontario's Ring of Fire ... without one iota change in the thematic profile. Same actors on stage. Albeit a touch methodical, its viability and historical angle make Sigurdardottir's novel worth a read.

BOOK 4 IN THE Thóra Gudmundsdóttir series

KCLSLibrarians Mar 27, 2014

If you like mysteries set in stark and forbidding places--like Greenland in deep winter--try this one by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir. Part of a series featuring Icelandic lawyer-turned-detective Thóra Gudmundsdóttir.

Isolated research complex located in frigid cold Greenland, where workers in a group quit and/or dissapeared like those of a classic horror scenario among aloof villagers, demonic creatures, haunted ghost tales, and ritualistic observances .
A newly assigned group which includes Thora Gudmundsdottir, while attempting to resolve the above happenings, they discover, bullying, extreme alcoholism in the complex and in the villagers, and typical group behavioral issues, which many they likewise assume.
An intersting read, with quick ending resolutions and reasons neatly tied like in a fairy tale.

Enjoyable suspence showcasing an area of the world with which I am not familiar. Quirky main character.
