This portrait of Jason Holliday, a black gay prostitute who dreams of a career as a nightclub performer, is drawn from twelve consecutive hours of filming in a New York City apartment.
As he reminisces about his life, Holliday discusses his homosexuality and the gay subcultures in San Francisco and New York. He jokes with the off-screen filmmaker and crew and maintains a sense of humor even as he recalls hustling, heroin addiction, and jail time. Holliday also performs for the camera, impersonating female entertainers and movie personalities such as Mae West, Butterfly McQueen, and Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the wind.

According to the half-hour bonus about restoring Portrait of Jason, the film got pretty lost before Milestone undertook a long, mountingly costly search for a print or prints in good enough condition to restore. One hopes that won't happen again, for it is, indeed, a pioneering gay documentary about a lifestyle that may, perhaps, still prevail, just as deeply hidden from the eyes of "normals" now as it was in the 1950s and 1960s. Unfortunately, Jason just about wears out his welcome in the film as restored, the bonus of surviving audio out-takes is just more of same, and no other bonus tells us squat about him. So this restoration is both priceless and tiresome.
