Ty Cobb is considered to be the greatest baseball player of all time. He had a reputation as the fiercest competitor of them all, but he realised that the qualities that made him successful also undermined his relationship with his children. Herschel Cobb's father was abusive, and his mother an adulterous alcoholic. After his father died, Herschel he began to spend a portion of each summer with his grandfather Ty. Heart of a Tiger is Herschel's moving account of how Ty Cobb seized a second chance at having a close family and finally to peace with himself.

Ty Cobb's best years in baseball happened a hundred years ago. I grew up with the usual image of him, as an eccentric, brutally competitive, brilliant and obnoxious ballplayer; unlikeable, but respected as one of the best two or three ever to have played the game.

This book stands that Ty Cobb on his head, in a sensitive and shocking story of a boy's relationship with his Granddaddy.

This is easily the best and most touching book I've read in years! It isn't about baseball, much. It's about family, and even if it might be colored by the fondness of childhood recollections, it makes Ty Cobb human, and no less great.

Read this book, even if you've never heard of Ty Cobb, or baseball, for that matter.
