In 2011, thousands of people followed the first year of a polar bear cub, Vicks, at the Royal Zoo in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, via a webcam feed. They became enchanted with the little cub.

Vicks was born in December of the previous year to Olinka, an attentive and protective mom. He made his first public appearance on the webcam in March 2011, and from then on he was a celebrity, capturing the attention and hearts of people around the world.

Mack van Gageldonk’s photo picture book chronicles the adventures of Vicks’ first year as he learned to walk, swim, catch fish and climb rocks, growing quickly from a small, helpless, fluffy newborn to a large, strong polar bear.

Did you know that baby polar bears are born blind and deaf, that these bears actually have black skin under that thick white fur, and that they are excellent divers? This book’s interesting factual content will engage as well as inform young readers with its fascinating facts and many wonderful photographs.
