SUMMARY: Joe tiptoes through the forest gathering his friends for a surprise. Along the way, he cautions them all to be quiet, but each animal makes his or her own unique sound as the group follows Joe. Finally they reach their destination and behold an unexpected sweet secret.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations were created in watercolor. They are nice and large for a younger audience. Each character is full of smiles and life as they follow Joe.

REVIEW: Even though this book is repetitive for the younger crowd, it has has a very nice rhythm to it. I enjoyed the sounds each animal made such as the donkey's clop clop. As more friends follow Joe, there is a parade of sounds children can repeat out loud. The story is very simple, but it has a sweet reward at the end. This would be a lovely read aloud for groups. The children could stand up and pretend to be each animal. When they come back to Joe, they can practice tiptoeing and being quiet. A wonderful snuggle up and read or group read.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: This book is advertised for ages 4-8, but its simplistic story and repetitiveness make it more appropriate for ages 2-5 and at school--grades pre-k to k.

Would be good for a storytime, with all of the different sounds and motions.
