Wilhelmina "Will" Huxstep is a creative soul struggling to come to terms with a family tragedy. She crafts whimsical lamps, in part to deal with her fear of the dark. As she wraps up another summer in her mountain town, she longs for unplugged adventures with her fellow creative friends, Autumn, Noel, and Reese. Little does she know that she will get her wish in the form of an arts carnival and a blackout, courtesy of a hurricane named Whitney, which forces Will to face her fear of darkness.

Haunted by shadows, afraid of the dark, when I read this book I instantly felt like I became Will and fell in love with all of the characters.

Will has a cool, old-fashion vibe about her which makes me want to read more books written by Laura Lee

Will is haunted by shadows; troubles that she would rather avoid. Her grandparents are gone, her parents are gone, and all she has left is the supportive aunt whom she lives with, and her friends. She is trapped by her life, and especially the darkness that scares her. To counter this, Will re-purposes items to create lamps. Not only do they chase away the dark, but this creativity allows her to express herself in a way that she can't with people. Her metaphorical shadows take on a physical form to represent her inner thoughts, and even hint at her past. Pointillism distinguishes these from the bold-stroked and cel-shaded approach of the rest. All is in blacks, greys or whites, which further manifests the fight against her fears. When storm Whitney hits, everything becomes darker, even the page gutters turn black, and it is at this point that Will comes face to face with her demons. Ironically, it is the safety of the light that hides things, and the scary dark that reveals the truth, making it unavoidable. The following power outage brings people together. Her friends deal with their own issues, and Will gains the willpower to finally move forward. Will beautifully narrates her story by speaking to us. Her tale is emotional, poignant, and filled with a depth of imagery that is rarely used. Tidbits of wisdom accumulate into the final message, after a reveal that leaves us near tears. It takes not only great courage, and great friends and family, to face ones most painful memories, but also a little bit, of both the light and the dark.
