This movie gives the tried and true screwball comedy treatment to a part of medical history that can be described as nothing less than hysterical.
What I think makes this film is that, although the rating is R for sexual content, the film itself is not as raunchy as the rating will allow. The stirrups include a small curtain to conceal what the movie calls "a woman's most gentle area," reactions to the prototype massager are played for laughs rather than for erotic display, and the genuine atmosphere throughout is quite docile.

Rather fitting for a Victorian era story, isn't it? It's a cute film.

I wouldn't call this movie "X-rated" at all. It addresses the real history of hysteria and how women's psychology was handled in the late 19th century. Jonathan Pryce and Hugh Dancy play the doctor team that perform stimulating pelvic exams to "cure" hysteria, and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays a suffragette who runs a home for London's disadvantaged women. Despite its serious subject matter, Hysteria is lighthearted and provides a lot of laughs.

Learn something new everyday. I enjoyed this DVD movie very funny and sad for the truth contents of how women were treated but to see this social progression evolved to what it is now(which has taken a disappointing twist). I even rented it a few times to share with my other gal pals.

Mine is a lukewarm comment. Farcical romp in Victorian times, sometimes a bit over the top to match the times. Maggie G is always worth the viewing time. It is an interesting history of the 'electrical massage' :)

A little surprised at the some of the lukewarm comments on this movie. I thought it was one of the most delightful movies I've seen to date. Of course, it was appalling how women's sexuality and emotional welfare was handled in the late 1800's. The social commentary was fairly light, but I looked at it as a fun romp through the history of the vibrator - not be to taken too seriously.

Hard to believe doctors actually "treated" women in this manner for their "ailments". Truth is stranger than fiction as they say.

It's not a bad movie, necessarily, but it's not great. Rupert Everett is actually unbearable, but I persevered for Maggie Gyllenhaal. She's such a great actress, I'd watch her read a book.

Very entertaining and informative.

Not my favorite. Had some socialist propaganda mixed with feminism, Victorian sexuality, and cute acting. Neither satisfying intellectually, for entertainment or anything else. But High Dancy is still pretty adorable.

Edmund: Mortimer, must you wear
that ghastly hand brace?
Mortimer: I must find some way to attend to these women properly.

Edmund: I believe the French have quite a bit of luck using their tongues.
Mortimer: Please be serious.
We're speaking of my patients. They need me. Perhaps for the first time, I feel... truly useful.
Edmund: Aren't you a rainy day?

Charlotte: Dr. Granville. Trawling for patients? I'm afraid you'll find no
cases of hysteria here. Women are all too busy trying to find enough to eat.

Another woman: Ah, Miss Dalrymple.
Always speaking out of turn.

Mortimer: No. I came to enquire about
Miss Fannie's broken ankle.

Charlotte: A house call?

Mortimer: Surely there's no harm in
following up with a patient?

Mortimer Granville: "Sir, I would be enormously grateful for any position that allowed me to offer relief to my patients, with little chance of killing them."
