Slow day at the office yesterday so finally saw DVD version of Robert Lepage's hyper-marketed Met production of Wagner's Das Rheingold - perfect music, casting, singing, orchestra - everyone cooking with flame. Except the costume designer. Deeply weird truck for all but the Rheine maidens, who stole the show in the first scene along with the magical LED water. Poor Bryn Terfel had to feel his way across a complicated stage with a great hank of wig hair covering one eye. Why, one wonders?

Also, high definition HD TV has its converts but maybe not so great for opera, which is designed to be seen from far away. It's not exactly helpful to see to all the straps, wires and production tricks we wouldn't ordinarily be close enough to notice, nor the rivulets of sweat streaming down a guy's face as he summons us in song to think of Higher Things.

Might be a good first opera for a sophisticated child who appreciates classical music but who might recoil at Puccini mush, which is, after all, an acquired taste.
