Teddy Bear: Dennis, a painfully shy 38-year old body builder, would like to find true love. He has never had a girlfriend and lives with his mother in a suburb of Copenhagen. When his uncle marries a woman from Thailand, Dennis decides to try his own luck on a visit to Pattaya as it seems love is easier to find there. Knowing his mother would never accept another woman in his life, he lies and tells her he is going to Germany for a competition. Pattaya turns out to be a cultural shock for him. The intrusive Thai girls shatter his naive picture of what love should be like. He is about to lose hope when he unexpectedly meets the woman of his dreams. There may be hope for him if he can only confront his mother.

Unable to find a love connection in his own backyard, professional bodybuilder Dennis follows his uncle’s advice and heads for Thailand where “...the girls are easier to meet.” After a few sad encounters with prostitutes Dennis finally hooks up with Toi, a widow who runs the small gym she inherited from her husband. But trouble is waiting for the two lovebirds back in Denmark where Dennis’ controlling shrew of a mother continues to exert a tight psychological grip on her gentle giant of a son. To his credit director Mads Matthiessen’s sweet little romance does not try to present us with a nordic version of Pretty Woman, nor does he gloss over the harsh reality of Thailand’s sex tourism industry; scenes of drooling pigs, their arms draped around young locals, are all too apparent. He chooses instead to move beyond the usual crop of “harsh reality” polemics and deliver a wholly captivating tale of one lonely man’s search for a heart to call his own. In the role of Dennis, the massive Kim Kold is a study in romantic yearning and quiet stoicism. Well done!

This is a sweet film about a lonely bodybuilder (in Denmark) who still lives with his mother. It was hard for me to get used to the excessive muscles - I am not at all into body building. He is so large and everyone around him is so small in comparison. But he is a gentle big hearted man who would never use his size and strength to hurt anyone. It's so well done - as if we as viewers get to see a bit of this man's life. I do love foreign films - it seems to broaden my perspective.

Outstanding, quiet little film with perhaps the performance of the year by the lead. One that will stay with you.
