I read the series in order....and loved Old Filth, of course. The middle book felt like a bit of a disappointment (perhaps I should have waited a little longer to read it). I liked this last one almost as much as the first and glad I read it. Always wanted to hear Terry's side to Old Filth's story and glad I did. I feel content now.

The last two books in the Old Firth trilogy capture the lives of his wife and other friends, notably the archrival Veneering. They're not nearly as funny as the first, but both are amazing pieces of writing with all these coincidences neatly tied together.

I love this trilogy of stories. You should read it in order: "Old Filth" and "The Man in the Wooden Hat" come before this title. If you liked "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand" or "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel", you may like these. I think Gardam's work has more depth; and she is a better writer. I think we will see these stories on t.v. or at the movie theatre at some point. Long may Jane Gardam write! She is now 85 and going strong with this series.
