"After years of crime reporting and writing pulp novels and screenplays, Samuel Fuller made his directorial debut with the lonesome ballad of Robert Ford, who fatally betrayed his friend the notorious jesse James. At once modest and intense, I shot Jesse James is an engrossing pocket portrait of guilt and psychological torment, and an auspicious beginning for the maverick filmmaker." -- back cover.

"I shot Jesse James", starred Canadian actor John Ireland portraying Robert Ford, as a member of the James gang. Frankly, the movie (1949), wasn't very good at all. John Ireland never reached stardom. Some claimed his politics in the era of the 'red scare' got him into trouble and maybe wasn't so bankable an actor. The real Robert Ford was only 20 years old when he literally murdered Jesse James (35 years-old) by shooting James in the back. Then Ford went on make money by reenacting his distardly deed on various town stages. Ford himslef was dead by the age of 30, dead at the hands of another murderer, Edward O'Kelley . The movie 'The Man Who Shot Jesse James' looks pretty far-fetched and contrived. Some of the names are correctly spelled by tere was no romance here, no buying oa wedding ring, no redeeming qualities of anyone. The real Jesse James was a criminal and deserved to be stopped. Why did it have to be someone as reprehensible as Robert Ford?

Crime & Punishment & Homoerotism. The production is cheap, but the film sticks to its guns, so to speak, until the end. Listen for the classic Sam Fuller inappropriate musical interludes.
