Beautiful, creative, and poetic. With no preamble the beginning starts off rather abruptly, causing some disorientation, but once it gets going it flows in what is not so much a narrative, as an experience. No words are wasted in creating this simple poem about two children, a dog, and a pair of red galoshes. Alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme, and imagery help to make each sentence full of meaningful impact. In almost all the images the galoshes are not used in the traditional sense, they are not so much used, as they are towed along on a journey through a storm, and eventually to safety. Images from one page flow into the turning ones with reminders of what has past (ex. the leaves on page one and two, appear at the side of page three). Watercolours compliment the weather theme, and ink is used to clearly define edges. Among the more subtle colours, the brilliant red galoshes always draw the eye. Few books achieve such a level of elegant simplicity, while providing so much for the imagination.
