Cassandra is lost, alone and grieving. Her much loved grandmother, Nell, has just died and Cassandra, her life already shaken by a tragic accident ten years ago, feels like she has lost everything dear to her. But an unexpected and mysterious bequest from Nell turns Cassandra's life upside down and ends up challenging everything she thought she knew about herself and her family. Inheriting a book of dark and intriguing fairytales written by Eliza Makepeace - the Victorian authoress who disappeared mysteriously in the early twentieth century - Cassandra takes her courage in both hands to follow in the footsteps of Nell on a quest to find out the truth about their history, their family and their past; little knowing that in the process, she will also discover a new life for herself.

I'd read this some years ago & enjoyed the story line. Preferred the print to audio.

I should have liked this book more considering it had all the ingredients of some of my favorite books. The archetypical evil queen, a princess and her loyal handmaiden were all present. A hidden garden and fairy tale grounds provided the scenery. The mulit-generational mystery was intriging but the changes between the points of view of the different characters were choppy and distracting. Also, some scenes were unecesarily drawn out.

I love this book! The story builds with little hints throughout very magical and listening to the book is makes the story come alive.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as an audio book to listen to in the car. The narrator's voice actually helped with the different characters in the book. Her deep voice and accents made me feel I was in the room with her when the men spoke. I had to bring the CD's into the house to continue listening because there times I just could not wait to hear what happened next.

Some of my friends could not finish reading the story because it does cover a few generations and there are times you forget which generation is speaking. When you listen to the CD you never get
get confused because you recognize the voices. I highly recommend this book but the CD version is a must.

This is a wonderful "listen". I don't enjoy stories that are TOO melancholy, but this is poignant and charming and fun and mysterious and sad. I loved the slow building of the characters and plot. Morton takes her time and tells the story right. It makes the finish so much stronger. There are characters to hate and characters to love, and those to sympathize - but they are all real.

I'm so glad to have listened to this book. Mysterious and a little magical. A little sad, but not heart wrenching. Very, very good.

Grabbed this of the shelf on a whim, and was hooked instantly. Was so sorry for the story to come to an end.
