You already know the story from the 1969 John Wayne version, so why would you watch the 2010 remake? For one thing, there’s the Coen brothers’ trademark gift for dialog, which fleshes out the characters as well as advancing the story. Then there’s Jeff Bridges cementing his status as one of this generation’s foremost actors as the unapologetically unpleasant Rooster Cogburn. And Matt Damon as Cogburn's overly earnest and profoundly unwanted sidekick. And the increasingly impressive Josh Brolin as the inarticulate thug they seek. And perhaps most impressively, newcomer Hailee Steinfeld as the fast-talking, passive-aggressively intimidating Mattie. At times somewhat violent, this version can also be quite funny. I wouldn’t say this is the best Coen brothers movie, since the tone of the last scene didn’t feel right to me, but True Grit is an entertaining and fascinating film.

2010. This was VERY GOOD. I really liked it. the 1969 Wayne version was more EPIC in scope; this is more like it was really like on the frontier in the late 1880's. Comedy, seriousness, death, weird stuff and grittiness in this movie. If you liked the 1969 version, you'll like this more realistic version too.

Very much like the book: very cold, empty, yet oddly satisfying. the performances from the cast all hit their mark, and the actors are so fun, and some of the most recognizable and entertaining actors of our day. If you love the John Wayne version, you will like this version.

A perfectly crafted Western, nothing like the crank-'em-out cowboy Westerns of the 1930s-1950s. The Coens thankfully resisted speeding up the action to the current frenetic movie standards, which probably discouraged Superheroes audiences, but heartened the rest of us. Jeff Bridges' Rooster is spectacularly disreputable -- hard to imagine anyone rendering the character better -- and Hailee Steinfeld's Mattie Ross is a marvel.

A relatively clean-fun type of Western movie. The second act was dragging on a bit, however it was more comedic than action at that point and did hit some high comedic notes. It did pick up pace on the third act, and it that point it was more of of a roller-coaster ride. Casting was amazing, particularly Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfield. Their on screen chemistry was outstanding. Glad I was able to watch it again on Netflix before they removed it. Not sure if I would have paid to seen this when it showed in theaters 10 years ago, didn't hit my radar screen back then anyway.

Such a good period piece. Great performances by all. Great justice to the novel.

Dull. This is not what I expected from the Coen Brothers.

I chose this movie because Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon starred in it. I'm not sure why the actors changed their way of talking to such a robotic, "dumbed down" tone. It could have been much better if the actors were allowed to express themselves more freely. Mark it up to extremely poor direction.

The only valid reason for a remake of a beloved film is to bring something new, and the Coen Brothers' True Grit does, if by a whisker. The end is truer to the book, and then, though I don't think it was necessary, they follow its heroine into her adult years. To compare the two films is to compare apples and oranges: the Coen's is grimmer and greyer, and Hathaway's is brighter and more expansive. Hailie Steinfeld is a child, and therefore closer to the idea of Mattie Ross, but John Wayne's magnificently broad performance has the edge over Jeff Bridge's grump. Want to argue with me? To quote Wayne: "fill your hands, you son of a b*tch!"

Ned - You answer me Rooster! I will kill this girl. You know I will do it!

Rooster - The girl means nothing to me - she's a runaway from Arkansas.

Ned- That is all very well. Do you advise that I kill her?

Rooster - Do what you think is best, Ned.

Wayne's version:

LaBeouf - What are you doing?

Rooster - back hands LaBeouf

Gotta love John Wayne's blase when delving out whacks of justice.

Lucky Ned Pepper: "What is your intention Rooster? You think one on four is a dogfall?" Rooster Cogburn: "I mean to kill you in one minute, Ned. Or see you hanged in Fort Smith at Judge Parker's convenience. Which will you have?" Lucky Ned Pepper: "I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" Rooster Cogburn: "Fill your hand you son-of-a-bitch!"
