For many casual listeners, reggae begins and ends with Bob Marley. There are few other musical genres that are so readily identifiable with one towering figure (Maybe James Brown and funk) and it's likely that are many people out there whose sole reggae album is Marley's "Legend," which used to be issued to every incoming college freshman at orientation. Reggae so often is associated with beaches, ganja, and good vibes, that it's easy to miss the cultural context and the political and religious aspects of the music. Despite it being easy to listen to, it's not easy listening, and it's not insignificant that it was the soundtrack to the early days of English punk. Anyway, this is Marley and the Wailers final album, from 1980, before Marley's untimely death in 1981, and is a classic of the genre. It's tuffer than tuff.
