Written in a dry, journalistic style, the scholarship slightly dated, this is nevertheless an introduction to the entirety of ancient philosophy -- from the presocratics to scholasticism -- in a single volume by a an authority whose multivolume _History of Greek Philosophy_ is still a standard reference in the field.
