While this is a story about people facing death, it is, at its heart, a story about life. Poignant and really touching, I really enjoyed getting to know the narrator, Ella, and her husband, John, as we learn about their relationship and lives together. I felt really connected to them and was sad to leave them at the end. Overall, it is a truly moving and human story. — Molly M., Oxboro Library

Fabulous story that will grab you from the beginning! John and Ella have been married sixty years. She has cancer and he has dementia. Against their children's wishes, they make one last trip in their RV along Route 66 to Disneyland. Issues are addressed that many of us try to avoid as we age or see our parents age.

I loved this book, although it is rather painful to read. Like a lot of Boomers, I am starting to think about end-of-life scenarios. Previous generations don't seem to have had the same kind of options that we Boomers do (and I'm not talking about financial resources).
It seems to be a fairly recent phenomenon to actively plan for end-of-life. So I loved that this protagonist took such an active role. It opened my mind.

It is a funny and touching read about an elderly couple, who have been happily married for more than 60 years. Now in their 80s and in failing health, they sneak away from their adult children and their doctors, and away from their home in the Detroit suburbs for a forbidden journey of rediscovery. I felt as if I really knew the characters and that they were people I could encounter in real life. I loved this book. (submitted by DD)

It was a heartwarming read. Not the ending I was expecting (and I had several endings conjured up in my mind!). It wasn't one of the best works of fiction on alzheimer's in my opinion but on aging and illness in general it was pretty poignant! I am curious now to see the movie.

Loved this book, it will fall under one of those books that I will never forget. Loved the elderly couple, some funny and some poignant parts. The ending made me cry, it certainly makes you think of your own immortality.

This is the oddly enthralling story of an elderly couple, on their last legs with Alzheimers and incurable cancer, who escape their worried children and endless medical appointments by setting out in an old RV on a roadtrip across the US. I was completely won over by these characters -- funny, spirited and unflinchingly authentic.

Funny, heartwarming, sad, this novel has all the range of emotions that we experience in life.
