Raised in a brothel, then wrested from the only life she knew by her father, so they could join the circus, Edith Piaf spent her teen years on the streets. She is finally "rescued" by a crime figure who gives her career a start and, ultimately, by her international success and final illness. Always frail, sickly, malnourished, and wildly temperamental, she was often on drugs or alcohol and was always in search of true love. Middleweight boxer, Marcel Cerdan, captures her heart and gives her something to live for, besides her music--at least for a while.

Marion Cotillard’s powerful performance smoothes out most of the rough edges in this dark tribute to the intense and turbulent life of France’s most celebrated chanteuse. Dahan’s episodic narrative weaves back and forth through time, from Piaf’s unhappy childhood during WWI to her sad and untimely death in 1963. The result is more of a loose collage than a standard biography which, taken in its entirety, leaves you with a keen sense of the woman behind the legend. I admit to not being a great fan of the biopic genre as I am constantly aware of the artistic license directors use in order to make their films watchable. The camera certainly lingers on Piaf’s private misery, often to the exclusion of anything else. It’s this lack of balance that left “La Vie En Rose” feeling incomplete and somewhat lop-sided to me. A passionate and sincere film nonetheless with some of the most dynamic acting I’ve seen in some time....just not destined to be in my personal top 10 this year.

Absolutely astounding, award winning (MANY awards!) performance from the lead actress who plays and sings Piaf!

Marion Cotillard has a wonderful performance. Watch the bonus features for insights from the director and Cotillard. This is a drama. The non linear story line adds intrigue.

Brilliant biopic about France's national treasure, chanteuse Edith Piaf. Marion Cotillard puts in an incredible performance, and it's quite easy to see how she earned an Academy Award for it. The film is structured in a non-linear series of flashback scenes that bounce from the distant past to the years at the end of Piaf's life. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Edith Piaf's wonderful voice and Marion Cotillard's great acting make for a fascinating film. I wish the movie had also touched on Piaf's relationships with German officers during WWII and her mentoring of Yves Montand.

I don't see what all the fuss is about with this film- Edith Piaf was a talented singer and she had a hard life- how you manage to make a boring movie out of all this is beyond me.
