Shredded Symbols: A Paper Pulping Workshop

1:00 PM – 2:30 PM
Minneapolis Central

Description

For part one of our New Narratives workshop, bring your own personal “pain papers,” such as a criminal record, court papers, divorce decrees, invoices with medical debt, etc. to shred, pulp, and stretch into new canvases. This workshop is a personal and collective practice of reclaiming power through destruction – we will confront printed memories that represent trauma, control, shame, or outdated versions of self and we will physically shred them to make new canvases for our new beginnings. This symbolic destruction clears space for a more honest, powerful narrative to emerge. Materials provided if you cannot or do not want to bring your own papers.

Collaborator: We Are All Criminals (WAAC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to challenging society’s perceptions of what it means to be “criminal.” This program is funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

View SEEN: In the Stacks exhibit – on display August 4-September 28 in Cargill Gallery on the second floor of Minneapolis Central Library.
