Author Talk: Never Whistle at Night with Mona Susan Power and Carson Faust

6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Minneapolis Central

Birchbark Books and Hennepin County Library are thrilled to welcome Mona Susan Power and Carson Faust, two wonderful contributors featured in the new dark fiction anthology, "Never Whistle at Night."

Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms, but what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear – and even follow you home. These wholly original and shiver-inducing tales introduce readers to ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge. They are a celebration of Indigenous peoples' survival and imagination, and a glorious reveling in all the things an ill-advised whistle might summon.

Carson Faust is the debut author of "When the Living Haunt the Dead(2024). He is two-spirit, and an enrolled member of the Edisto Natchez-Kusso Tribe of South Carolina. He lives in Minnesota, where he works in the philanthropic sector, and is at work on a second novel.

Mona Susan Power is an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. She is the author of multiple works of award-winning fiction, and her latest novel, "Council of Dolls," is longlisted for the National Book Award. Power is a graduate of Harvard and the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. She lives and teaches in St. Paul.
