This fantasy/mystery with a Sherlock Holmes and Watson riff is a meticulous delight. Like most of Bennett's novels, it's about 10% weirder than it needed to be, but he always delivers.

This sordid noir is an excellent peek in the dark corners of the LA celebrity world featuring two characters: a media fixer and an ex-cop, written with James Ellroy-esque dark poetry.

A smart, action-filled fantasy novel set in a Roman Empire-like word as an adopted teen infiltrates a high-stakes magic academy. Filled with political intrigue, this will scratch that Brandon Sanderson itch.

A listless amusement park worker, Hardly Reed, finds his purpose in life - rescuing children from an abusive home, using his friends and (scant) resources for help. "Hardly" Reed's stoner, haggard charm might not work on everyone, but give it a shot.

Small-town horror meets dark academia when a down-on-his-luck author gets invited to be a part of the faculty of a small college with some very dark secrets. Slow start but picks up nicely; great descriptions of Lovecraftian horrors await.

Similar to Scalzi's "Kaiju Preservation Society," this breezy sci-fi novel is an absolute blast to read, as the main character inherits his uncle's supervillain organization - and all the headaches that go along with it. A widowed and retired librarian discovers new life (and a new direction) when he unexpectedly volunteers at a local senior center. A quiet, pleasant, character study of a novel that never really kicks into gear.

A charming novel about a reclusive author who opens a Golden-ticket-style competition for the rights to his latest book. Not quite a romance, not quite YA, but book lovers will swoon.

Cosby's on a legendary run; his latest, a noir thriller about a small-town Black sheriff who races to solve a series of interconnected murders while juggling local corruption, racism, and family drama, is one of his best yet.
