I have a lot of mixed feelings on this book. As a story on it's own, it's pretty intriguing, and the art is beautifully done. But this story has a lot of feminist and woman-empowerment aspects, and so I have to look at it from a feminist perspective, in which there are flaws. Overall, I'm immediately very weary of any feminist or pseudo-feminist literature that is entirely produced by men (both the author and the illustrator are men), as I feel feminist narratives should be told from the perspective of someone who has experienced misogyny first hand, not just read about it. The illustrations are most definitely sexualized. Not a new thing for comic books, but a little disappointing none the less. And there are most definitely statements that exclude large groups of women, many jokes at the expense of fat women; and many times in which biology and/or appearance is obviously what is taken into consideration for deeming someone a man or a woman(stating that men's actions are biological, or Wonder Woman actually groping someone to tell his gender), and while I'm not sure if it's intentional or will be addressed in later volumes of the series, it for now has very cissexist and transphobic implications.
So basically, good story as a story but a little uncomfortable when you observe it from a feminist perspective, which, considering the series so far appears to have many feminist themes, is important to do.I have a lot of mixed feelings on this book. It was pretty good. I found that I really got emotional towards the end, which I honestly don't do much with movies, and the music was fantastic. I kinda didn't like how they acted like Angel was a transgender woman but then randomly towards the end called her a drag queen and had characters refer to her as "him", maybe it can be chalked up to how transgender women often used to have the same terminology used for them as drag queens, and so since this was trying to portray late 80s life, they didn't want to update the terminology? Apart from my confusion over that, it's a pretty good film.It was pretty good. As someone who is very educated in LGBTQ+ topics, I gotta say, I don't really get all the praise for this movie. While I think it's good that it focuses on how the character feels rather than how the people around them feel, which is something a lot of trans and gender identity movies do poorly, they honestly don't do a very good job, throwing in a lot of scenes that feel like "look at the characters little sister doing something stereotypically feminine like a normal girl should!", and the ending message does not feel very trans positive. Even if we take out that I find it to be a bad movie in terms of transgender representation, there is also just the fact that I didn't like it as a movie, period. It kind of falls into the super indie and artsy movies that, if you are into that kinda thing, you might like, but I personally find pretentious and boring. As someone who is very educated in LGBTQ+ topics, I gotta say, I don't really get all the praise for this movie. This was honestly a really great book. Probably one of my favourites! Interesting lore, great characters. A really good story! It's mainly just starting out, and so the pace is a little funky and I feel like we could learn more about the characters, but it really just makes it that much more intriguing.

A pretty good book! Really good for thinking about gender roles. While it isn't exactly PG, I think it is an important enough book that kids should read this with a bit of guidance. I would have given this five stars, but I took a star off because 1. It would have been nice to mention transgender people, even though this isn't a transgender story, so kids didn't have to walk away thinking that transitioning was not a thing if they really truly didn't identify with their birth assigned gender, and 2. one of the characters uses "psychotic" as an insult, which I think further pushes the misconception that psychotic people are inherently evil or dangerous.
If you push that aside though, the book has quite a lot of redeeming qualities, but I do think the points I made should be kept in mind.A pretty good book! There is no such thing as high-functioning or low-functioning Autism. Autism is a spectrum, and that means that some people will have higher functioning areas and lower functioning areas within themselves. A "low-functioning" kid may just not be able to talk but be actually quite good at math and reading, and a "high-functioning" kid may be able to talk or do okay in school but have constant meltdowns. "Low-functioning" Autistic people are often told that they are not able to do anything, while "High-functioning" Autistic people are often treated like they have no disability at all. Functioning labels are both discrimination and just downright inaccurate.
This book is written under the impression that high and low functioning Autism exist, which it simply does not. Every Autistic person will have strengths, and weaknesses, and those may change day-to-day. I do not support ableism. There is no such thing as high-functioning or low-functioning Autism. While many people may think that books about discovering gender and gender identity are explicitly for people questioning gender and gender identity in the first place, I think it may actually be MORE important that people who have never questioned gender at all read this book. It should be taken with a grain of salt, as some of the things the author says are debatable, but it is a fantastic book all the same that brought me to many important realizations. Should be required reading for every person in the world. While many people may think that books about discovering gender and gender identity are explicitly for people questioning gender and gender identity in the first place, I think it may actually be MORE important that people who have never questioned…
