I'm not usually a reader of historical fiction but Mantel's Man booker winning novel "Wolf Hall" is an engrossing tale of the rise of Thomas Cromwell. Mantel seamlessly captures Cromwell's story and although a lengthy read the pages fly by.

Lapena weaves a very wicked web. It makes you wonder what secrets your neighbors are keeping - actually I don't want to know. Enjoy this very tangled story.

I had been carry this book around for a decade plus after a coworker had recommended it. I am so glad that I took the time to finally sit down and read such a well written book. This is a thoughtful and beautiful memoir of the author as a young man on a walking trip through Spain. He sets out at nineteen and "finishes" in his early twenties on the eve of the Spanish Civil war. Lee's writing seems to flow at the speed of his walking trip - not to say slow - but languidly.I had been carry this book around for a decade plus after a coworker had recommended it. Early in the book there's a mention of an Agatha Christie book in the hotel; a foreshadowing that you are about to read an homage to "And There Were None". This book was reminiscent of Ruth Ware's snowy murder mystery "One by One". Both of these books were interesting reads. Murder mystery set in a library - I'm ready. This is not quite a 4 star review because the ending of the 2 separate storylines left me just slightly wanting for more. It is an enjoyable read with a book within a book. There's the novelist writing a murder mystery with a long-distance fan/reader that may be trying to help to much with the research. There's the novelist within the book that finds herself in a murder mystery within the Boston Public Library.Murder mystery set in a library - I'm ready. I was drawn into this coming-in-age story of a young girl in Mombasa, Kenya. It is a a tale set in "modern" times with no fixed date but her story of self-determination as a young girl is wrapped in a sea quest to find her father. In a fish skeleton boat raised from the sea by her guide, Hamza, an orange talking cat, she must confront three sea monsters of the caliber of the ones that decorated old maps. Her magical tale is infused with Hadrami and Swahili culture.I was drawn into this coming-in-age story of a young girl in Mombasa, Kenya. I enjoyed this quick read but this was not a psychological thriller nor Ware's best work. it was easy to figure out the villain and I found some of the repetitive musings by the protagonist to be tiresome.

A very prescient dystopian novel that was written in 1998. Olamina continues in her quest for creating Earthseed communities. This dystopian story describes the impact of climate change with water shortages, houses falling into the sea, and a Pox. Whoa! This is my first foray into reading Joyce Carole Oates. My first thought was a line from a Leonard Cohen song - so you want it darker. The first story "Detour" read like a Twilight Zone episode. "Intimacy" is a creepy story. "Parole hearing..." is a very California slice of history that I was aware of as a child. A continuation of Naomi's story of finding missing children from the book "The Child Finder" but moved from the remote wilderness of Skookum Forest to gritty streets of Portland. Naomi's own backstory intertwines and eventually resolves with the string of murdered street children. As in "the Child Finder", Denfeld captures how abused children use their imaginations to survive the terror and horror of their abuse. In the "The Child Finder", Madison re-tells her version of "The Snow Child" (Russian folklore). In "The Butterfly Girl" , Celia, a street child that escaped sexual abuse at home, draws wonderful butterflies that she also sees as a coping mechanism. Another well-crafted story that deals with tough subject matter but written with remarkable tenderness.A continuation of Naomi's story of finding missing children from the book "The Child Finder" but moved from the remote wilderness of Skookum Forest to gritty streets of Portland. After hearing Rene Denfeld read from her third novel, "The Butterfly Girl" which is a follow-on to "The Child Finder", I finally read this. The subject matter of child abduction and abuse is not down-played but Denfeld's story is so well-crafted that the story is engaging without being exploitive. The protagonist, Naomi, is a private investigator who was also a abused child that eventually escaped her situation and made it her life's work to find other lost children. Madison Culver was lost in the snowy woods of Skookum Forest, Oregon, an area of old gold-mining claims and fur-trapping. Naomi's search is not only made difficult by the terrain but by the fact that three years have passed since Madison disappeared.
